If your Irish citizenship is confirmed and the passport stage is next, there is a visible update to look forward to. Ireland began issuing a newly designed passport on 26 June 2026. The change brings new artwork and security features to newly issued documents, while the practical route to applying remains familiar.
What has changed
The Department of Foreign Affairs says that all passports issued from 26 June 2026 will feature the new design, imagery, and security features. The pages move through the Irish year and draw on landscapes, wildlife, seasonal rhythms, and the wider story of place. 1
The update is about the new book that is issued to you. It does not change the citizenship stage that comes first. If Foreign Birth Registration applies to your family route, citizenship still needs to be confirmed before you move on to a first Irish passport.
What you may notice in the new book
The official design features native flora and fauna, an Irish wolfhound motif, Newgrange spirals, Celtic knotwork, and hand-drawn illustrations. It also includes updated dynamic imaging, antenna, holographic, and personalized-image protections. 1
For families with Irish roots, the design makes a practical travel document feel more closely connected to the island, its history, and the people who have carried that connection around the world.
If your passport stage is next
Passport Online is the Department’s fastest application route and is available from anywhere in the world on a phone, tablet, or computer. Processing begins once the required documents have been received. 2
First-time applications cannot use the Urgent Appointment service, so leave room for the standard process and check the official Passport Service guidance when you are ready to apply. 3
