The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade does not partially process Foreign Birth Registration applications. If anything is missing, uncertified, or inconsistent, the application is returned, and when you resubmit, it rejoins the processing queue rather than picking up where it left off. With complete applications already taking approximately 12 months, a single avoidable error can turn a one-year wait into considerably longer.
Returns restart the clock.
A returned application does not hold its place in line. Corrected submissions rejoin the queue, which in practice can add months to the overall timeline.

This package checks and assembles the documents you gather. If records need to be professionally traced in Ireland, our Genealogy & Records Research service covers that.
The Department of Foreign Affairs currently estimates approximately 12 months for complete applications. Applications that need more documents can take longer; careful preparation is designed to reduce that risk.
Enough to prepare and review your application properly: one-on-one consultations during preparation, rounds of document and form review, and email guidance on the included preparation and review work. Work outside that scope, such as professional records tracing, is quoted before it begins.
Original certified vital records are transmitted by tracked post or courier, stored securely while your application is prepared, and used only for your application. The FBR office returns your originals directly to you after processing; any originals still in our possession when your engagement ends are returned to you by tracked post. Everything is handled according to our Privacy Policy, and digital copies are permanently deleted within 60 days of service completion.
